What We Do

Placido and I began working with the Ayoré people in 1995 while still in medical school. Both of us graduated in 1998, and have continued work among the Ayoré during these years. We have found our medical training to open previously closed doors. We offer free walk-in medical care for the indigent in Santa Cruz, hold day clinics in needy rural communities, practice friendship evangelism with our patients and promote micro and community wide development projects.

The motivation behind our efforts in Ayoré villages is to create magnet projects that draw villagers out of the city- where alcoholism, prostitution and drugs are a problem- and back to a healthier environment. In Poza Verde, for example, the project involves church strengthening, support of children's education, medical assistance and agricultural projects planned to provide work, income and food. In another village we are currently focused on finding a healthy water source for the community as well as strengthening the church and supporting children's education. In urban camps we participate in children's ministry, health care and Bible studies.

Although we personally participate in Bible teaching, we also help individuals and couples go to Bible school and support tribal leaders, individually and through involvement with FRALIC, the association of Indigenous pastors and Christian leaders.

A new and exciting area of ministry has taken us beyond the borders of the department of Santa Cruz onto the rivers of the Beni, a jungle area of eastern Bolivia. Several times a year we travel to this area with our local team, brothers from the Beni and visitors from other places. We travel the rivers visiting communities in a spirit of service, offering our skills and resources in medicine, Bible teaching, and children's ministry.
